The Lumanog name is synonymous with Philippine made acoustic guitars. As far as I can remember, when someone in the family wanted an acoustic guitar the reply is always to “get a Lumanog” coz “it’s the best”.
And since the family hails from Pampanga, everyone knows where the best of the best Lumanog guitars can be found – at the hub of guitar and music instrument shops all bearing the name Lumanog in San Anton, Guagua, Pampanga.

Authentic Lumanog acoustic guitars at ROMY LUMANOG guitar shop in
San Anton town, Guagua, Pampanga. Philippines.
Thus, when it was my turn to get my first acoustic guitar – as soon as we changed Apo Ando’s $100 gift into pesos – we rushed straight to San Anton in Guagua, me and my cousin haggled the hell out of the C.B. Lumanog music shop.
My first acoustic guitar was a classical guitar with nylon strings – it had a spruce top and rosewood fingerboard. This guitar served me well, and I player her a lot, she ushered me into the world of music. 3 months into playing the guitar, I was in the school Banduria – and my Apo was actually able to watch the banduria’s recital with me proudly plucking his gift guitar. Ah, the good old days.
Anyhoo, back to the Lumanog guitar thing. Since I was quite determined to get a local guitar that I can have lying around the house – a guitar I can pick up anytime to just strum out melodies and ideas buzzing in my head – I decided to trek to Sta Mesa Manila and get one.
But heck, I checked out five shops and the quality of the “Lumanog” acoustic guitars there were simply horrendous. These are the plywood type guitars painted blue and red no different to those hawked on the streets. Their best guitars, with the nice wood tops, were not as bad but were not good either – really messy worksmanship on the outside and inside. No Sta. Mesa “Lumanog” acoustic guitars for me.
The perfect opportunity to score an authentic Lumanog guitar presented itself when we headed to Lubao for the annual family reunion. On the way back to Manila, since it was a Sunday and the traffic was heavy, I thought why not pass by San Anton see if the shops are open – and what guitars they have.
CB Lumanog shop was closed (I always bought my acoustic guitars from CB Lumanog – 3 of them), but ROMY Lumanog’s shop was open – and Romy Lumanog himself was in the house.
I immediately asked for their best guitar available. He handed me a cutaway guitar with Langka wood and rosewood fingerboard – the action felt right, the sound was OK, the workmanship was ok (not close to perfect but was ok – clean enough, good enough). He showed me a couple more guitars but I went back to the first one he showed me, so I decided to take it – for P3,000 only ($60-$70)!
Btw, this Romy Lumanog acoustic guitar had a GIBSON mark on the headstock! As much as non-Lumanog guys are ripping off the Lumanog name, this real Lumanog is ripping off the Gibson mark, too. Oh well.
The next day I immediately took the guitar to the recording studio in Makati to find out what it sounds like as captured by quality microphones. Hmmm, not bad. Not bad at all. The sound is not big, the resonance leaves a lot ot be desired, but it is not boomy and twangy either – the tone is quite balanced across the strings. Hmmm, seems like this guitar wont just be lying around the house.
So there, something about Lumanog acoustic guitars – hand made in San Anton, Guagua, Pampanga, Philippines.

I have a Lumanog Mandolin “Supersonic” looks very old. Would like to learn when built the orgin of this what looks to be a rare mandolin by Lumanog. Has two “f” sound holes in what looks like a cedar top, the body and neck looks natural mahogany with pen strip hand painted or inlay band on top joint between cedar and body, white banding on body sides top and bottom “Ivory”? body is not plywood, Appears to hand made with an age of 50 years or more. If anyone knows about this instrument please email a reply. Allan, Florida, USA

July 15th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
As far as I know the only way to buy one is in the Philippines or I have seen a few online like on ebay. I am from the States too and just bought a nice Lumanog in pampanga during a trip to the Philippines. It is really beautiful and plays better than my $500 Takamine. It was 8000 pesos which was about $160 dollars at the time. So cheap. Everyone there thought it was expensive and they were laughing at me, but I was laughing too because I practically stole this amazing guitar from a master luthier!

electric bass and electric guitars are not the forte of CB Lumanog. Good luck with your bass guitar though, the BOTTOM LINE is always up to the player.

sometime in 1993, i bought a guitar at Joshua Music Store at San Anton, Guagua, Pampanga. The disappointing thing is that it gives a “buzz” sound (sasapik, in local kapampangan parlance) whenever I strike the No. 6 (lower E) string. When I returned it for repair, i was terribly dissapointed when “Mr. Joshua” himself (he’s somewhere in Europe now) loosened the strings and gave a “first aid” on my guitar by putting a “palito ng posporo” on the saddle para daw hindi na sumapek. My good God, talking about “quality”. I just hope that the Lumanog Family will finally get their acts together and establish a QUALITY GUITAR MANUFACTURING company in the level of the “MARTINS” of AMERICA. I also would like to hope that the Philippine Government will assist this guitar making industry. So much for now. Your comments are welcome (good or bad), you can reach me at memorandum40@yahoo.com (zardoz of pampanga…+639296720186)

my father will be going home next month and i want him to bring back one for me…i LOVE guitars!!!!
January 9th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
I found a Lumanog in a local thrift shop here in Virginia. It has a Ziny Bandilla label and has Ovation name and look. I bought it with the bridge broken off. I had the bridge glued back on by someone who works on acoustic instruments (including Martins) for alot of bluegrass players. He said it was not a bad guitar, he didn’t say it was great. I just put lighter strings on it. I have had it for about 2 years and never had a problem with it.
Just take the other makers name off and change the style alittle. Give them alittle more Quality. Then ship them to the US. I think they would sell. Look at Ibanez. They changed their design after making copies in the 60s and early 70s and are well known today.

I have owned several Guagua guitars and ukuleles and had the opportunity to inspect the workshops.
Guagua has many talented luthiers and the know-how to make export quality stringed instruments. But in my view, more of the following is required:
-High quality materials
-Machine tool finishes
-A consistent approach to quality
Every part of an export quality instrument will be machine made and assembled on precision jigs.
Every instrument in an export quality batch will be close to identical and assembled from carefully-selected materials obtained from a single source.
Every new instrument will be thoroughly inspected and faulty ones removed before sale.
My understanding is that the wood used in Guagua guitars is chiefly jackfruit, which is adequate but not ideal.
That said, a musician who is prepared to take their time in Guagua and spends time browsing and playing in a few shops will not be disappointed.

hi good day..how can i make a good looking website??
February 5th, 2009 at 3:19 am
To eliminate the mass confusion, I am going to make it simple for you all. The Best Lumanog Guitars were made in the past. In the Golden Years of Phillipine Guitars making. And they were labelled “LUMANOG ORIGINAL”. These were the times when quality materials, wood (not plywood) were used and handmade. The craftsmanship was so good that Yamaha, Japanese Guitar makers, tried to contract the Lumanog Originals to make guitars for Yamaha. These were the folks in Sta. Mesa and Raon (Quiapo). Unfortunately, the owners passed away 20+ years ago. And somehow, their passing contributed to the quality deterioration of the Lumanog Guitars being sold today. There is a lot of reasons really and one of them is to cut cost due to fierce competition. Apparently, an increasing number of Filipino Music lovers are more concerned low prices than high quality guitars. Naturally, this lead the new era of Plywood bodies and Funky paint finishes. This also tells you that everything is about cost. Decades ago, in the 50′s to early 80′s, the cost of materials and value of Peso are higher. Therefore, buyers could purchase high quality guitars then. If you think about it, Guitar manufacturers only follow what the market direction dictates. Believe me, they would rather manufacture good quality, high priced guitars. But then again how many are really willing to afford them. Also, here is the IRONY. You can still find the Patented LUMANOG ORIGINAL out there. Unfortunately they are PIRATED. Lumanog Original is gone. If you see one being sold, they are Fake. If you want top notch quality, then pay the price.

my dad got me my first electric guitar from romy’s place 20yrs ago. it was a les paul knock-off, and was really, really heavy, and sounded like crap, very poorly made. one of the fretwires actually came off, and we had to bring it in. even the fix was bad, you could see the wood filler after they finished. it was a cherry sunburst with an uncarved top, like a les paul special, but had a headstock like that of a custom’s with the split diamond decal, no binding, and had dot markers. i scrapped the headstock decal, and with liquid paper, wrote in “les paul” to make it look like a les paul standard. my dad didn’t get a good deal, because he’s american. word of advice-bring a tagalog speaker with you, and park your car where they can’t see it, make it look like you took a jeepney to get there….nonetheless, i miss that guitar. i’ve worked my way to owning ’59 reissue les paul, but i wish i still had that guitar. i learned sweet child o’mine on that thing, and i still remember how it smelled….i sold it to a Peter Mark Dizon in Pampanga back in 1993, and he eventually sold it. if by any chance the current owner sees this, please contact me through youtube posted above. I WANT MY LUMANOG LES PAUL BACK!

April 22nd, 2009 at 3:43 pm
hi gerry! i dont know what to feel when you shared that it seems only in san anton pampanga lumanog that you can find a GOOD QUALITY lumanog guitar. i happened to order already a UKULELE via phone at Lumanog V. Mapa in Sta. Mesa. I am not familiar with the place so i just called their phone and asked if they have a ukulele.I wonder if you are familiar with ukulele? They have one made of mahogany plywood@P600 discounted price… a lot cheaper than the one i bought at Lyrics @P2500. But the one i got from Lyrics is made in china and the wood used is spruce and turtle back fiber glass. its really pretty but my only concern is–its not electric uke. i want to convert it to electric ukulele so in case i want to amplify it —its doable. My Dilemma is the guitar pick-up clip wouldnt fit-in to the hall (hole) of the ukulele since its smaller. So am making do only of what i got from JB music-the saction type pick-up that you either attach to the uke front body or at the back. Its not very stable but as I keep experimenting I discovered the pick-up is better placed at the back (my uke has turtle back shape like my ovation electric acoustic guitar) So in my search of who can possibly convert my existing spruce uke into electric i ended up calling lumanog. We agreed on the phone that i will buy the regular ukulele they have in store @P600 only provided that they install a pick-up called PISO or pizo? Am not sure about the spelling. All I know is, its P800 per Mang Emil Lumnanog. He himself can install it. So I agreed. So ukulele plus cost of the pizo/piso (whatever you call it) installed would total to P1400 plus labor then i requested to replace the transparent nylon string with the authentic black nylon string used in guitar plus the button (i dont know what its called) where you attach the strap.
anyway if you have some tips you can give me pls email me at ekkram@yahoo.com. I also compose songs but havent tried submitting them yet…hopefully i can when i get to meet the right person.

April 24th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
Hi Markke, I’m sure good quality Lumanog’s can be found and bought from other than San Anton Guagua – describing aesthetics of a guitar’s build and make is very subjective – be sure to trust your own instinct and judgment when deciding to purchase a guitar – or any item for that matter, hehehe.
Since 2005, for amplifying acoustic guitars.I prefer the added tone from PIEZO ceramic pickups on the bridge/saddle (such as the Martin Thinline). I like to combine piezo signals with magnetic type pickups such as the classic ProMag by Dean Markley, also the Fishman neodymium magnetic pickups are quite good.
Getting matching guitar pre-amps and amplifiers is also a must.
Good luck with the guitar pickups.

Just bought a Ruben Lumanog guitar two days ago (April 22, 2008) for my 12-year old son. He is very interest in playing a guitar and is now enrolled at Yamaha Music School. The guitar tutor did some adjustment on the tune. Two hours after using the guitar the bridge gave way… I am not expecting that the guitar would last a lifetime since I just bought it for P1,700 only inside a mall but it should not give way in just a few hours. I went back to the seller and asked for a replacement unit. The seller refused to replace it. They will just repair it. I have asked them just to refund me my money. But still they refused. I am now planning to go to Department of Trade and Industry next Monday to file a complaint/case against the Ruben Lumanog brand and the Outlet in Ever Gotesco Mall at Commonwealth.

May 11th, 2009 at 9:56 am
Ok talaga ang lumanog, hindi nga siya ganun ka sikat katulad ng yamaha, gibson or fender. Pero, local ito eh, iba rin naman pag pinoy.
May 12th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
My dad and granpa said that lumanog is the best guitar in the Philippines most especially those made from Cebu.. They sounds like a gibson guitar and they are made from a jackfruit tree which produces a great sound and not heavy to carry.. But some of my friends told me that there are also fake lumanog just like one they bought from a guitar shop. It sounds awful, it vibrates and and hard to control the sound.. So beware!!!
May 13th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
hi..nag search lng ako about lumanog guitars..kasi bibili ako one of these days..so gusto ko sana malaman yung quality nya bakit sikat at sinasabing maganda daw..

Hi Amabel, I just concluded my 21 days visit in the Phil this May 2009 and I was trying to connect with Lumanog Manageemnt for a big project. Among other things we are able to tap into some funding so we could buy affordable guitars and Host Guitar Clubs in Public/Private Schools for a National Event. I hope you could help me link up with someone. My next visit to the Phil. is in Oct. Praying I could visit Lumanog Factory. God Bless The Lumanog Family and clan, Rev. Jaren Lapasaran

I RECENTLY ACQUIRED AN OLD UNUSUAL GUITAR. THE HEADSTOCK(?) SAYS RUBEN LUMANOG. I OWN AN ANTIQUE SHOP IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA – BUT RARELY BUY MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS BECAUSE ALTHOUGH THEY SELL WELL THEY ARE OUTSIDE MY AREA OF EXPERTISE.
I CAN HOWEVER APPRECIATE THE ARTISTRY OF A WELL CRAFTED INSTRUMENT & THE GUITAR IN FRONT OF ME IS NOT WELL MADE &FAR FROM A WORK OF ART. I AM INTRIGUED BECAUSE WHEN I OPENED THE CASE IT APPEARED TO BE AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR VERY MUCH LIKE THE 1 SHOWN IN YOUR 2ND PHOTO -2ND ROW -3RD GUITAR OVER. THE SAME CUT AWAY(?) STYLE -THE FACE LOOKS LIKE BLACK GRANITE &IS BANDED ALL AROUND IN WHITE WHICH EXTENDS
AROUND THE SIDE -THE BORDER AROUND THE FACE IS INSET W/ALTERNATING LIGHT &DARK WOOD FORMING A ROPE LIKE PATTERN.
WHEN I TOOK IT OUT OF THE CASE I WAS SURPRISED TO FIND THE SIDE &BACK HAD BEEN MODIFIED W/MOLDED PARTS. ON THE LOWER
SIDE A FREEFORM PATCH IS SCREWED ON &CONTAINS 2 DIALS (VOLUME &TONE) W/2 TOGGLE SWITCHES IN BETWEEN. SO-O-O THIS IS EITHER A VERY EARLY PROTOTYPE (ATTEMPT) @AN ELECTRIC GUITAR -OR IT IS A VERY POORLY MADE PIECE OF JUNK.
CAN ANYONE ENLIGHTEN ME? -ANDREA
September 24th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Ms. Slavkin,
It’s a piece of junk.
September 27th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
hello. i’m from pampanga i got my 1st guitar when i was 14 y/o. romy lumanog din.. kaso the one i picked was priced P2000 a turtle back cutway, that was my 1st guitar. wala pa akong alam sa gitara nun. so romy lumanog suggested me to buy that guitar.. ngayon ko lang napansin, ang pangit pala ng gitarang yun.. (wrong pick) haha, in the end natapon na kasi basag talaga as in walang kwenta!! hehe.. my second guitar i got, sa romy lumanog din.. this time i was 17 y/o priced P1700 a flat back cutaway, mas malaki siya.. well with the 1st months of playing it.. the sound quality is good. hindi madaling naalis ang tune.. i think its almost 2 and a half year na ang lumipas since i got the guitar and the quality is still fine(maybe 80-90% sound quality).. despite the fact na napabayaan ko yung gitara na nakatambak nalang ahaha!!.., i’m planning to get a langka guitar.. or an electric guitar this year. sana makaipon ako ng matino..

November 23rd, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Hello,
Salamat!!!

I advice you to buy Senior Guitar Spruce Cut away metal keys, coz it ha good sounds, regarding the strings i suggest you should require extra string to the seller bcoz if the guitar is new thr strings still stretching everytime you use and tone the guitar, you should choose guitars withour bridge pin coz they easily remove from the hole in wherein the string is attached.

hello guys,
you can buy at v.mapa in manila, however you have to be very picky and try-out the guitars for your preference and inspect it thouroughly for quality. try to get the langka guitars, approx 3-4000php, coz they sound good, it costs much but i guarantee you that it is better than the plywood types. there are also spruce guitars that are around 2000php.
i dont have the time to go to pampanga and i am close to v.mapa so i brought my 1st acoustic guitar there for 800php back then (it is now 5 years old hehe).
planning to buy a semi-acoustic guitar this january for an old skul looking one, trying to save more for a better guitar. i always get the individual steel knobs (incase of breakdown i dont have to replace all the knobs) and no paint on the body (coz it bubbles in time due to heat).
lumanog guitars are great but remember, it always comes down to the guitarist.
wala sa pana yan, nasa indian hehehehehe
take care! enjoy playing !

Maraming pong salamat.

Nagpa custom ako ng guitar sa Lumanog, ginagawa pa siya hanggang ngayon, sana maganda kalabasan hahaha, ung guitar na pinagawa ko is a Billie Joe Armstrong Signature guitar ng Gibson, ung black, ung ginamit ni Billie Joe sa Video na Know Your Enemy, hindi nga lang soapbar angg pickups, Double Coil, kasi sabi nila , hindi daw sila naglalagay ng soapbars, most of their electric guitars have double coil pickups.
May 3rd, 2010 at 7:50 pm
By the way, super mura nung pinacustom ko, its just P5000, and it has the Gibson seal na haha!

I was stationed a Clark AFB from 1973-1976. I owned many a guitar picked up along the main thoroughfair in Angeles City. There were several Lumonog stores on both sides of the street. I had the pleasure of a Gretch imitation 12 string, and it was a quality instrument. Unfortunately, upon returning to the US, I didn’t know how to properly care for it during the harsh winters. The Lumonog store that carried the Gretch guitars also had a 14 string. WOW. Single low E, A and D were like a reqular 12 string, and the G, B and High E were tripled. It had an amazing sound. My best guess on the woods would have been spruce and maple, due to the light natural color. My dream was to always have a 14, 12 and 6 string in the same style.
BTW – Sonnyboy, are you the Jimi Hendrix look alike that used to play in Angeles City and Manila? Keep on rockin!

I got a Milo Lumanog acoustic guitar in 2005 at Angeles City. i think i bought it 1200 php, and up until now it’s working great.
Also, in 2001, i bought an electric guitar in a Lumanog Store in Dau, Mabalacat, Pampanga and the fretboard sounds crackly. i mean, you press it fully but the sound is not full.
it still works but the fretboard is the problem.

to; all lumanog family and clan,
I dont know what to say to all related to lumanog, you all related , have same root and blood .theres no need to give a hardship to any individual that carries the name of lumanog and the blood of it.dont everybody happy that they can see the future of the bloodlines prolong with prosperity.
The inquiry started when all the relatives of lumanog ,never been acquainted and know each others.one time in 1980s i remember lumanog family had a re-union in gua-gua pampanga.whooo i never realized that i have too many relatives .
If only my grandparents are still alive today, and have the time to introduce their family and next generation of clan ,that would be great.the only idea to be connected all the lumanog bloodlines is by internet .
Atleast each family download to youtube ,introduce your family and show pictures ,atleast this way ,we know each other ,probably later on the future we will organize a re-union and meet everybody.
What i say is ,let be peace with lumanog family ,only the family can help and truly love each other.industrious unerdstanding and passion are still burried in genes of all lumanog.
By the way im the grandson of Rufino Bansil AND Paulina Lumanog .Even if they were gone ,i know theyre happy to see that lumanog genes are strong and prospering.
Thank you,
Rommel Bansil

hi, may i know if lumanog (Guagua Pampanga) is also selling drums? actually i have my lumanog guitar for about couple of years ago. but i want to purchase a drumset for my son, if lumanog has this drum set, i’d rather choose to buy from them rather than to buy from other music stores. please if anyone has the idea let me know by responding on this comment. i am coming back to philippines by sept. so i can decide ahead of time.
thanks a lot.
